- Where can I find this lamp?
During my travels on the intertubes, I have a had a bad habit of collecting images I think are interesting. I drag images off of web pages and into my “unsorted” pictures folder which I check out every year or so for a laugh. The only thing that’s bad about this habit is that unlike a bookmark, there’s rarely context associated with an image file. There is rarely metadata about the images and filenames often provides no clues as to the source of the image. During my annual pictures folder perusal, I rediscovered this really inventive lamp design. I must have saved it from a web page but I don’t remember which one.I don’t have any information about the image but would certainly like to find out more. Is this a real lamp I can buy? Who designed it? If it’s for sale, where can I buy it? There’s no metadata in the file itself and the filename wasn’t any help either.
How can I find what I want using only this image?
- Idée brings Lunch 2.0 to Canada!
We at Idée like the idea of getting together for lunch while checking out great local tech companies and meeting interesting people. So we decided to take a note of what the group in Silicon Valley has done and start Lunch 2.0 in Canada! What is it? Lunch 2.0 is lunch events at any (interesting and innovative) tech company where you show up, eat, and talk to interesting people. This is additional way for the startup communities across the country to get together and share ideas (and keep each other well-fed), and it will hopefully be an extension of what events like DemoCamp achieve.

5:00 – Doors open
6:00-7:00pm – Demos
7:30-8:00pm – Ignite Presentations
9:00 – We move to the pub to continue our conversations and share a few pints. We are looking for demos and Ignite presentations.
DemoCamp rules:
- All demos are 5 minutes demo presentations
- No powerpoint for the demonstrations; we have made a couple of exceptions in the past but really we want to see your working stuff and not a powerpoint. Plus powerpoint is evil - we all know that - and we are good. So no powerpoint!
- Ignite presentations take the same amount of time: 5 minutes. They should be entertaining and fun. You get 20 slides x 15 seconds per slide. All Ignite presentations need to be submitted in advance so either you are ready to rock the house or not!
So, what are you waiting for: submit your demo or Ignite talk now. I will publish a little guide to doing demos at DemoCamp but for now I will leave you with this little write up from Dave Winer and just remember:
If you have five minutes to tell your story, make sure that by the time minute #1 is over, the prospect has seen enough to be totally blown away.
- Idée Awesomeness
Wednesday is my favourite day at Idée. Wonder why? Well that’s because it is Idée Lunch Day. On Wednesdays, every Wednesday, we have an Idée company wide lunch. Lunch is brought in - sometimes we even make burritos! - and we all get to sit down as a giant team and have lunch. If you have been outside today you will understand why this is super sweet today. Who wants to go outside in this weather!
I miss burrito days though!
- Britney Economy 101
Duff MacDonald from Portfolio Magazine writes about a back-of-the-napkin calculation of just how much Britney Spears is worth to the multitudes who make money off her.
A bit of background for those of you not familiar with Britney (!):Britney has sold 83 million records since the release of her debut album in 1999, bringing in more than $400 million to Jive Records, her recording company. Even her 2007 album sold well, despite her troubles. Her tours have grossed nearly $150 million; the average take for her 265 solo shows is $583,138, according to Pollstar, which tracks touring data.
But what I found fascinating is the Paparazzi generated revenues.
A Britney photo garners anywhere from $250 (for a run-of-the-mill shot of her at Starbucks) to $100,000 or more. The photo agency X17, which has a team trailing her 24-7, estimates that Britney accounts for 30 percent of its revenue: It sold $2.5 million worth of Britney photos in 2007 alone, including $500,000 for its exclusive Bald Britney pics. Competitor Splash News says that Britney accounts for 10 to 15 percent of its business, boosted this year by $200,000 for photos of Britney in a hot tub. All told, Britney probably makes up a full 20 percent of the paparazzi business.
Something to think about this cold Monday morning! Full article and photo gallery here.
