- Attention technophiles and TinEye fans!
Hello, fellow nerds and geeks! If you:
a) looooove technology
b) are a STUDENT (proof required)
and
c) live in the Greater Toronto Area
Then you’re in luck! Because we’ve got two student tickets to meshU burning a hole in our collective pocket, and they’re up for grabs!
For those out of the loop, meshU is “…a one-day event of focused workshops on design, development and team management given by those who have earned their stripes in the startup game”. You will get to hear from–and hang out with–some pretty cool peeps in the technology arena.
The TinEye team is all about technology love, and the execution of great ideas. So if you’re interested in scoring a ticket for the big day on May 17th, drop us a line and tell us why you want to go. What tools and technologies are you into? What cool projects are you working on? What are your plans for world domination?
The two most interesting responses (as judged by our staff of robots) will each receive one ticket. We will be accepting entries until Wednesday May 5th at midnight, EST. Winners will be announced the following day! Remember, you must be a student to use these tickets, and meshU will ask for identification.
Oh, and this probably goes without saying, but meshU is a small event and tickets sold out… so if you won’t be able to make it to Toronto for the 17th yourself, please be a dear and wait for the next TinEye giveaway. Thanks!
- A simple TinEye tutorial
For anyone who is new to TinEye (welcome!), or who just wants to brush up on the basics, here is a tutorial covering all of the essentials:
- Search using the website
- Search using the plugin
- Find the largest image, or the most transformed image
- Compare results to the original image
- Share your results
Search using the website
The website offers two methods of search: by URL or by upload.
To search by upload (i.e. search for an image on your local hard drive), just click the ‘Browse’ button and locate the file that you would like to search for.
To search by URL, just paste the address of the page or image that you would like to search. For example:
- This is an image URL: http://blog.ideeinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/TinEye-Heart.jpg
- And this is a page URL: http://blog.ideeinc.com/2010/02/23/tineye-index/
- You can also paste a whole domain URL: http://blog.ideeinc.com
If you search for a page or domain URL that contains more than one image, TinEye will ask you which image it is that you want to search for. Just click on the one you want.
Search using the plugin
We’ve got a plugin for Firefox, for Chrome and for IE. We’ve also got a bookmarklet that will work with any javascript-enabled browser.
For the plugin, simply right-click on any web image (it won’t work with images on your local hard drive) and select TinEye from the context menu.
You will be whisked away to the TinEye website to see your results.
Find the largest image, or the most transformed image
To find the largest or most transformed image in a set of search results, simply take advantage of the ‘Sort’ option on the left side of the screen.
‘Best Match’ is the default sort option and shows the images that are closest to your original image first.
‘Most Changed’ shows the images that are the most transformed from your original image first (i.e. the images that have been edited the most heavily).
‘Biggest Image’ shows you–you guessed it–the highest-resolution version of the image in your search results first.
Compare results to the original image
The ‘Compare’ tool lets you quickly switch back and forth between your result image and your original image. This animates any differences between the two images, making changes easier to see. It’s especially handy if you’ve sorted by ‘Most Changed’ and your image matches have been heavily edited.
Share your results
If you would like to share your search results with others, you can do this easily via Twitter, Facebook, or pretty much any other social media. Just use the ‘Share’ tools on the left side of the results screen.
If you want to share an individual match instead of the whole page of results, you can do that too. Click on ‘Link’ underneath the match that you want to share, and you’ll get a permalink to the results for just that particular image match.
And there you have it! All you need to get started as a TinEye power-user. Now get out there and put those skills to use!
- Share your TinEye success stories with us!
We often receive emails, tweets and Facebook messages from people who have been helped by TinEye and want to share their story with us. That is awesome, we love giving our robot a pat on the back!
Today we’ve introduced a little feature specifically for sharing your TinEye success stories. A new link appears right in your image search results:
So any time you have something to share, go ahead and tell us!A few examples of TinEye love from the Twitterverse:
From @zefede
From @JaimeNPeters
From @rod3000
We love hearing from our users, and of course we would like to share these stories with other TinEyers as well. So keep your eyes peeled for interesting and useful TinEye tales of triumph. Happy searching!
- HackTO
The first time I attended a hackathon it was in Silicon Valley and I totally fell in love with the idea of getting together with a group of people with limited resources (a laptop, skills and an internet connection), an API and the desire to create an application. Felt pretty similar to what any startup does in its startup days! So when Corey and I talked about a hackathon being held in Toronto, for local developers to work with local APIs, well you know what happened next: HackTO was born.

I am very excited to announce HackTO. The idea behind HackTO is to have a series of APIs made available by local startups. And connect these APIs with local developers to build – in a day – amazing applications.
We are still working out all the details – much planning ahead – but here are the basics:
- DATE: Saturday May 15. This is an all day hackhaton. We will be providing breakfast and lunch.
- LOCATION: TBD. We are still working out the location details. It will be downtown.
- AVAILABLE APIs: Freshbooks, Idée, PostRank, CanPages + more. We will be announcing additions to these APIs in the coming days.
- SIGNUP: Sign up is currently open, there is a $10 fee for registration.
- JUDGING AND PRIZES: We are working on awesome prizes for the best applications developed during the hackhaton. Stay tuned for details.
If you’re with a technology company or startup you think ought to be involved, get in touch lboujnane (at) ideeinc.com or just say hi or ask questions.
- Unveiling our TinEye redesign
Hello folks! If you haven’t noticed, things are looking quite different over at TinEye. We have been working on the redesign with the great folks over at silverorange, and we’re sure they’re just as excited about the launch as we are!

Aside from a whole new look, the navigation and layout of the site has changed. And of course there is the addition of our new mascot! This robot-on-wheel will need a name soon… do I smell a contest?
Back to business. What exactly has changed? Well…
We’ve prettied-up the way results are displayed
The sort order is now clearly visible on the left side of your results, along with some easy ways to share your results with others. For image matches that appear on multiple domains, we’ve added a little orange count in the corner of the image thumbnail.
We’ve made it possible to share individual match results
Unlike the ‘Share Results’ column on the left side of the page which shares your entire set of search results, clicking ‘Link’ under an individual image match will allow you to view and share just that image match (anyone you share with will have the option to see the full set of results, as well). You have asked and we have delivered!
We remember what you were looking for
A small but important update! Now when you look for a web image, TinEye links back to that image in your search results so you don’t have to keep another browser window/tab open.
We’ve introduced badges
Share the love! Embed one of our cool new badges on your website and help get the word out about TinEye.
We’ve introduced content partner images
If you haven’t heard already, TinEye is officially accepting image submissions from online contributors. We have added a form to contact us if you manage a large online image collection and would like to submit them to the TinEye index. We have already indexed iStockphoto, Photoshelter and Clustershot and we have some further announcements to make very shortly.
We have also started identifying our various content partners in your search results. This makes it even easier to attribute the original author or source of an image. Just click on the URL in the ‘TinEye Contributor’ box to get to the official page for that image on our contributors’ website.
There’s plenty more to see on our new website, so do hop on over and have a look. Better yet, say hi and tell us what you think, or drop by our Facebook page. In the meantime, we are going back to work on the next update!
- TinEye: new TinEye website release coming soon
While working on our next TinEye website release our product manager is losing her head!
- TinEye index now over 1.4 billion images
We just added 26 million images to the TinEye index. So happy searching!

- Ideeplex Potluck
It is Potluck Day in the ideeplex and the TinEye team goodies have been arriving! I am so hungry already! I will try and capture additional photos throughout the day.
- Let’s say you have gone back in time…
Nice one. Okay. We’re going to assume that you’re on earth and you can read English. So far, so good. But how can you build all the amenities of tomorrow when you’re stuck in the past? Don’t worry your poster has this one covered.
and that pretty much sums up why I love TinEye! I had forgotten about Ryan North‘s fantastic Tshirt until I read BiteTheByte blog post. Incidentally Ryan and Dan also love TinEye. Thanks guys! I am now going to order the poster!
